Which UK visa is right for me?
If you want to come to the UK but you are unsure of the best visa route, our expert team of immigration lawyers can help you make the right decision.
The first thing we would check is your nationality and reason for coming to the UK. Some nationals do not need to apply for a visa if they are coming to visit and can instead apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA). Something important to understand is that you cannot come to the UK as a visitor and change visa categories while you are here.
Other factors that you would want to consider include:
Do you want to be able to settle long term or are you only seeking to come for a limited time?
If you want to stay in the UK permanently this limits the visas available to you and would direct you towards specific routes such as a skilled worker visa where you need an eligible sponsored job or a family member visa where you have a qualifying British national family member to join. However, if you want to come for limited periods only, you can explore other options such as a visit visa or a Global Business Mobility visa for certain short-term work transfers between overseas branches.
Do you want to have the ability to work or study while you are here?
Your reason for coming is likely to determine which visa you should apply for as all visas will have conditions attached to them including whether you can work, study and access public funds.
Do you want to bring family members with you?
Some visa routes such as most student visas do not have the option of bringing family members with you to the UK. Similarly, if you are applying for a work visa some categories of employment also exclude the possibility of bringing family members.
All of these are important considerations, and the answer to which visa is right for you will depend on your personal circumstances, what you want long term and your nationality.
