We actively work to reduce the environmental impact of our business and are continually improving the sustainability of our operations.

We are committed to reducing our environmental impact and managing our operations responsibly and sustainably. This is central to how we run our business and how we support our colleagues and clients.

MFMac has published a formal Carbon Reduction Plan  in the form specified by the UK Government under Procurement Policy Note (PPN) 06/21 "Taking Account of Carbon Reduction Plans in the Procurement of Major Government Contracts". Our Plan sets out our emissions baseline, our targets, and the steps we are taking to achieve meaningful reductions. It guides how we manage our footprint across our offices and operations and strengthens our commitment to sustainable business practices.

Our offices hold strong BREEAM ratings and we promote paper-light working practices across the firm. We also encourage low‑carbon travel options for colleagues when commuting or travelling for business. These actions underpin our ISO 14001 accreditation for Environmental Management.

We are proud members of the Legal Sustainability Alliance, a collaborative network supporting the legal sector as it responds to the causes and effects of climate change.

We continue to operate a wide range of initiatives to limit our environmental impact, including extensive recycling facilities, digital-first working procedures and the promotion of walking, cycling, and public transport.

Scrutinising our supply chain

We scrutinise our supply chain with the aim of sourcing locally and supporting sustainable businesses as far as possible. We use a bicycle courier for all local deliveries, which account for around 90% of our total. In addition, our contract taxi firm was the first Carbon Neutral-certified company in Scotland, which means that our taxi journeys leave no net carbon footprint.

Wherever practicable, we try to operate regular scheduled deliveries to the office (e.g. for stationery supplies, off-site archiving uplifts/retrievals etc.) to minimise our indirect carbon footprint caused by those visits.

Encouraging environmentally-friendly travel

Where intra-office meetings are required but in-person collaboration is not essential, we encourage the use of technology, in particular Microsoft Teams, avoiding the need for our people to travel. Almost all travel between our Edinburgh and Glasgow offices is done by train, and we avoid taking taxis for short journeys whenever practicable.

To facilitate environmentally friendly commuting by our staff, we provide lockers and shower cubicles in our offices. A significant proportion of our people travel to work by cycling or walking, and we participate in the Government-sponsored "Cycle to Work" scheme. We also offer our staff interest-free loans for the purchase of season tickets for public transport.

Efficient and sustainable office spaces

Our Edinburgh office at Haymarket is located in an extremely energy efficient building, which has a rating of “Excellent” on the BREEAM scale. This is the second highest rating on the UK’s most popular measure for assessing a building’s “greenness”.

Within our offices, we work to recycle as much as possible, with a focus on maintaining client confidentiality at all times. We adopt a comprehensive paper-light protocol in our day-to-day operations, and all of our work is underpinned by our ISO 27001 Information Security certification.
