Powering Progress: MFMac’s Legal Partnership with Scottish Women’s Football

Scottish Women's Football (SWF) is the governing body for women's association football at every level below the Scottish Women's Premier League. SWF oversees youth games and the senior pyramid, supporting opportunities in football for girls and women across Scotland.

Scottish Women's Football

Background

The organisation plays a crucial role in promoting and developing women's football, ensuring that players have access to the resources and support they need to succeed in the sport. SWF's efforts have contributed to the growth and recognition of women's football in Scotland, fostering a vibrant and inclusive football community

MFMac has been serving as the Official Legal Partner of Scottish Women’s Football (SWF) since September 2024, with a partnership set to run through 2027. Their legal services span a broad and impactful range of support areas, reflecting both strategic legal counsel and a strong commitment to social values.

Legal Services

MFMac’s legal support to SWF includes commercial contracts, IP, Data Protection and Governance.

  • Commercial Contracts: Advising on and drafting agreements, including those with major sponsors such as ScottishPower and Barclays
  • Intellectual Property: Protecting SWF’s brand and associated rights.
  • Data Protection: Ensuring compliance with data privacy regulations.
  • Governance: Supporting the structural and regulatory frameworks that underpin SWF’s operations

This partnership builds on two years of pro bono work by MFMac’s team, notably Susan O'Farrell, Josh Grieveson, and Valerie Armstrong-Surgenor, who developed a deep understanding of SWF’s mission and challenges

Beyond legal services, MFMac’s partnership with SWF is also a platform for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging through joint initiatives such as participation in Pride and Rainbow Laces campaigns, shared CSR efforts and support for wellbeing through recreational football programmes and opportunities through PRIME, Modern Apprenticeships, and other social mobility schemes

Recognition and Visibility

MFMac’s work with SWF has earned industry recognition, including being shortlisted for “Legal Team of the Year” at the 2025 Women’s Football Awards.
