Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day – 15 May

This year, Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day takes place on 15th May. The annual event aims to raise awareness of spinal cord injuries and the challenges faced by those living with such injuries, whilst also promoting their rights and wellbeing.

The day highlights the importance of prevention and encourages a greater understanding of how spinal cord injuries can be avoided in the future. It is led by the Spinal Injuries Association and supported by charities such as Back Up Spinal Cord Injury Charity. These organisations carry out vital work providing advice and rehabilitation support to individuals and their families following a spinal cord injury.
Spinal Cord Injury Awareness Day also provides an opportunity to raise funds for ongoing research, rehabilitation and support to those affected.

According to the Spinal Injuries Association, more than 105,000 people in the UK are living with a spinal cord injury, with an estimated 4,400 new cases of spinal cord injury every year.

What is a spinal cord injury?

A spinal cord injury happens when the spinal cord is damaged, interrupting messages sent between the brain and the rest of the body. Depending on the location and severity of the injury, this can affect movement, sensation and normal bodily functions.

For some people, this may result in reduced mobility or sensation, whilst others may experience paralysis, chronic pain or loss of bodily function below the site of the injury.

Common symptoms include:

  • Pain or pressure in the head, neck or back
  • Loss of movement
  • Numbness, tingling or loss of sensation
  • Muscle weakness or spasms
  • Difficulty with balance or walking
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control
  • Breathing difficulties

In many cases, spinal cord injuries also have a significant impact on individuals' mental wellbeing.
Spinal cord injuries can have a major impact on individuals, sometimes preventing them from carrying out day-to-day activities, such as using their hands, walking and carrying out personal care. Many individuals require ongoing rehabilitation and specialist support.

What causes spinal cord injuries?

There are a number of causes of spinal cord injuries, however traumatic injuries remain the most common cause. According to the World Health Organisation, road traffic collisions and falls from height are the most common causes of these injuries. Accidents at work and sports-related injuries also make up a large number of these injuries.

Spinal cord injuries can sometimes be caused by medical negligence, including delayed diagnosis and surgical errors. Whatever the cause, the consequences can be devastating and lifelong.
