Re-Power Energy is at the forefront of transforming urban spaces with their innovative PV canopy solution. Designed to integrate seamlessly into car parks and other urban environments, these solar canopies not only generate renewable energy but also provide shaded parking spaces and support electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure.
Project Overview
The PV canopy system maximises the use of available space by installing solar panels on canopies that cover parking areas. This approach turns car parks into renewable energy plants, generating solar power to fuel EV charging stations. This not only offers a sustainable solution for EV drivers but also contributes to reducing the carbon footprint of urban areas.
Client Collaboration
In Glasgow, Re-Power Energy is partnering with Osprey Charging Network Ltd and Galliford Try Digital Infrastructure to build a cutting-edge rapid EV charging hub featuring a unique solar canopy. This project aims to provide affordable public charging for EV drivers and reduce the need for solar panels to be built on fields, making it a win-win for both urban development and the environment.
Legal Services Provided
We acted for Re-Power Energy in respect of their inaugural UK project based on Duke Street, Glasgow. Our legal team played a pivotal role in negotiating a long-term head-lease with the owner of the site, ensuring that all terms were favourable for our client. Simultaneously, we negotiated a long-term, highly bespoke sub-lease with an EV charge point operator, Osprey. This involved drafting and finalising complex legal documentation to secure the interests of both parties.
Project Execution
The legal documentation was recently concluded, and Osprey is set to install a minimum of 12 rapid EV points in early 2025, while our client erects their own canopy infrastructure, creating a substantial "destination" EV charging hub. Our legal team ensured that all agreements were meticulously drafted to cover every aspect of the project, from construction to operation.
Additional Legal Support
Additionally, we facilitated the grant of a new substation lease to power the development. This involved negotiating terms with the relevant authorities and ensuring that all legal requirements were met to secure the necessary power supply for the project. We also put in place short-term advertising arrangements with Osprey, who will wrap our client's canopy in their branded livery. This required careful drafting of advertising agreements to ensure compliance with local regulations and to protect our client's interests.
Outcome
This is a "proof of concept" pilot project, and the expectation is that similar projects will now be rolled out throughout the UK. Our legal expertise and strategic advice have been instrumental in bringing this innovative project to fruition, setting the stage for future developments in the renewable energy and EV charging sectors.
